Word Study: The Scriptures

There are some who call themselves ministers of Christ (the enemy comes as a messenger of light) who say that the Old Testament is not necessary for believers to read today. Do they not know the one true gospel is the Mashiach died for our sins according to the Old Testament (scriptures), He was buried and He rose again the third day according to the Old Testament (scriptures). (Luke 24, 1 Cor 15:1-6) They evidently do not know that all understanding comes through “the scriptures of the prophets” (Old Testament) in light of the Mashiach’s death for our sins, His burial and His resurrection – Yeshua of Nazareth is the only Mashiach of God.

The Greek word for “scriptures” is “graphe” and it simply means “writing”. “Graphe” is found 51 total times in the NT and is translated “scripture” 51 times. In Latin Vulgate “graphe” was translated “scriptura”. The Latin word “scriptura” is then Anglicized to become “scripture”. “Graphe” should be simply translated “the writings” each of the 50 times in the NT it references the OT. The 1 time “graphe” does not reference the OT writings is in 2 Pet 3:16 where it is written, “they that are unlearned (in the gospel) and unstable wrestle with understanding the hard things Paul stated in his letters (epistles), and the hard things other apostles wrote in their letters (epistles). This passage does not speak of hard things to understand in the flesh, but it speaks of spiritual things hard to understand, because some have not their spiritual senses exercised by the one true gospel to discern what is good (the gospel) and what is evil (antichristos/ “against the Mashiach”/ “against the gospel”).

The following are the 50 verses “graphe” is found in the NT, translated “scriptures” and evidently the OT is what is spoken about:

Mat 21:42; 22:29; 26:54, 56

Mark 12:10, 24; 14:49; 15:28

Luke 4:21; 24:27, 32, 45

John 2:22; 5:39; 7:38, 42; 10:35; 13:18; 17:12; 19:24, 28, 36, 37; 20:9

Act 1:16; 8:32, 35; 17:2, 11; 18:24, 28

Rom 1:2; 4:3; 9:17; 10:11; 11:2; 15:4; 16:26

1 Cor 15:3, 4

Gal 3:8, 22; 4:30

1 Tim 5:18

2 Tim 3:16

James 2:8, 23; 4:5

1 Pet 2:6

2 Pet 1:20

There are many other references to the OT in the NT. For example in Romans “graphe” is found seven times, but the OT is either quoted or referenced at least 42 times. To remove the OT from the Bible would be to remove vast portions of the NT. I must speak as a fool when presenting this writing, because God has granted me grace to accept the one true gospel without reservation or contention, and the one true gospel is the Mashiach, Yeshua of Nazareth, died for our sins according to the Old Testament, He was buried and He rose again the third day according to the Old Testament. If I remove the Old Testament from the NT, I preach another gospel which is not another at all. If any person, or a messenger from heaven or me, preach another gospel than the one you have received, which I know I preach by the grace of God, let them be accursed. I say this not one time, but two times. If any one preach another gospel than the gospel I clearly declare, let them be accursed – let the judgment of God fall upon them.
